When I see discussions of this idea I'm reminded of something that happened about 25 years ago when the first Apple Newton MessagePad came along.

Lots of people were excited about an electronic device we could use to offload valuable information from our brains.

Well yes. But as a journalist I'd already been doing this for 15 years with my reporters' notebooks.

Some of the human race had been offloading information and storing it elsewhere at least since Babylonians use clay tablets to store grain information.

Digital allows us to do this at a different pace and scale.

There's a problem finding things in the vast, disparate data collections we build up, but finding anything more than a few weeks old was near impossible with a reporters' notebook, especially so given my woeful shorthand.
