@danielpunkass I appreciate this reminder. Calling in would have been so much more effective and would have left a more profound impact than calling out. Shame may seem like a good teacher at times and it can be but more often than not it just spreads resentment and hurt.

@sim0ne Good point. Too many people assume shaming is the only chance at success.

@danielpunkass I remember Merlin Mann once saying he’s never seen anyone have their mind changed by someone yelling at them online. Not saying no one has a right to be angry, how one thing affects myself can be totally different to another person. There will never be a one size fits all to perspective. But, I can’t say I’ve seen too many instances of a resolution online that each party has been satisfied with, for whatever the reason.

@danielpunkass as a queer user of Micro.blog I 100% agree with this. I have been a user of both Micro.blog and omg.lol - but I’m considering dumping my lifetime account at omg.lol because of the behaviour of its owner. I utterly loath purity tests and mob pitch-forking. I despise the rapid pace feedback loops of the mob internet. This has also been a horrible experience as a queer person as things are discussed by non-queer people without taking the time to ask how I and others felt.

@danielpunkass This is well said. Thanks for sharing it. We could all benefit from being a little bit less reactive, a little more thoughtful, and a little more nuanced. Thanks for reminding us.

@danielpunkass Nuance. Perfect title and prescription. Exactly what is required, even if Manton’s detractors would seem to equate nuance with complicity.

@danielpunkass I agree. Who elected Adam Newbold king? I’m not willing to throw Manton under the bus just because he didn’t jump high enough when this Adam character snapped his fingers. Manton has always been decent to me over the years and I intend to return the courtesy.

@bradenslen I just checked. Adam’s recent timeline is pretty much all attacks on Manton, or retweets of criticisms. Putting all your efforts into trashing the reputation of someone online on the basis of guilt by association tells me more about him than about Manton at the moment.

That would be eye-raising enough in any circumstances, but from a competitor?

@adders I hate guilt by association and I don’t admire Adam’s conduct.

I’m a cynical old git, and I noticed Adam is a competitor, which surprised me at first, but that thought never leaves my mind.

@danielpunkass thanks for sticking up for @manton, a great guy whom anyone that follows him should know the charges being thrown at him are ridiculous and that Adam’s behavior is frankly deranged.

I hope this is an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the temperature right now.

@johnbrayton So after seeing Vincent’s most recent post it seems like 1)Vincent may not be the monster he’s been made out to be, 2)Manton did the right thing by not throwing him away because he actually knows him, 3)but Manton still needs to make his personal opinions public even though it’s not about how he feels (for clarity - last part is sarcasm).
