@annahavron Never heard about a green heron before! Herons are one of my favorite birds.

@odd Not uncommon in the US (in the right habitat). Smaller and, well, greener than the more common Great Blue Heron.

@toddgrotenhuis Didn't you write about living near a heron rookery, or am I misremembering?

@annahavron We haven't seen any nests, yet (though @JMaxB was giving me tips on spotting them up in the sycamores), but we get tons of great blue sightings and have had some green sightings, too.

Our rural acres include a couple ponds, a sizeable creek, & wetlands. The herons find lots of good hunting there. We've actually named it "Heron Haven".

@toddgrotenhuis that sounds idyllic! I grew up in very rural places and miss being able to wander through settings like that. @JMaxB that's news to me too re their affinity for sycamores; I'll look more closely in future

@annahavron I can't say the herons have a special affinity for sycamores, but sycamores like to grow along streams, so they're perfectly placed for the herons. Incidentally sycamores were very common in SE Ohio where we used to live, much less so in upstate NY where we now live. I miss them.
