Thinking about that usb c change on ipads and impact on iOS devices in (say) 2 yrs.

You have a phone. When you need ‘pc mode’, slide it into a “screen/keyboard/mouse/trackpad ’station’ “ and away you go.

The stations are low cost. ‘Joe Public’ only needs one device.

Thoughts?

@JohnPhilpin For many? Probably. Though current iOS pricing is about equivalent to Mac prices. The midrange iPad Pro (w/o cellular; w/ folio) is $1,650; the midrange Air is $1,600. 🤔

@JohnPhilpin But full "pc mode" with a mouse, etc would require a different OS (at least according to Apple's current philosophy). An iOS dock would look more like an iPad+Pencil+Keyboard. Still cheaper than a Mac, but a good iPad-style touch screen won't be that cheap.

@Bruce part of my prediction is the assumption that mouse support WILL come to iOS - i can never get used to leaning over a keyboard and touching a screen - unnatural

@JohnPhilpin Apple has changed its mind before, but bringing the mouse to iOS would be a big change in its stated philosophy. I think it would take the equivalent of Forstall leaving for it to happen (Ive?). To me it’s more likely they’d drop the Mac and the mouse all together.

@JohnPhilpin the mouse and keyboard imagined in 1968 are coming to an end...

@adamprocter don’t disagree but there has to be something beyond leaning over a keyboard and touching a screen ... which is far from ideal ... as is talking ... and tho on way out ... they are going to be around for a while.

@JohnPhilpin what about a dynamic OS adapts according to the host device + periphals connected. That’s probably the future of appleOS I suspect.

@adamprocter interesting ... and would fit the phone in your pocket as your single device for all your compute needs automatically engaging with peripherals as needed.

@JohnPhilpin I think I saw a sketch of a ‘MacBook’ that a phone snapped into to become the trackpad and processor.
