Much has been written about the deteriorating Music.app experience. The new UI never really clicked for me… I barely understand the difference between Listen Now and Browse. So I’ve been trying Spotify on the web and it seems as good or better than the native Music.app.

@manton We're currently cutting costs from the household budget and I now regret having re-subscribed to the Apple bundle a few months ago. Feels like I foolishly wasted money when I consider how much more pleasant I find it to play music locally.

They've dropped the ball so badly that even people I know, who are not at all interested in tech, have complained about how Apple Music is worse than when they were using an iPod.

@SimonWoods We have the Apple family plan but I'm not sure why because all the kids use Spotify anyway. Probably time to consolidate.

@SimonWoods Agree, I feel like they just aren't getting it. I've ripped my CD collection to FLAC and am using Roon to stream it around my house. Anything new I buy is an LP or a FLAC digital download.

@manton recent Spotify convert here 😋 It was my original streaming service way before Apple entered the space. Spotify is still very much the same it always was… and. it. just. works.

@manton WRT to the overall tenor of the linked article, 100% agree. I also agree that Apple Music is really bad, but I prioritize lossless, high res, and Dolby Atmos (renamed spatial audio by Apple) content, so I'm actually happy with it over Spotify for the time being. For the moment. Also, I don't do a lot of browsing or "discovering" as I tend to go directly to what I want to listen to. Even that doesn't work great in Apple Music, though! Things need to improve over the next 6-12 months.

@bjhess @manton that's not just Apple that is suffering from mediocrity in UX. I see it all over the place. I'm almost ready to return to the unplugged physical where companies can't constantly mess with my (their) stuff!

@bjhess @garo I think we'll see improvements over the next year too. This seems to be a recent pattern with Apple... Ignore an app or service for a while, then when complaints reach a tipping point they jump in with a fix or redesign. Stretched too thin, I think.

@manton That makes sense. I wonder if delivering the higher quality things was relatively easy and a strategy to give them a longer runway to work on not-Apple-Music.

@manton Spotify has a better experience, but I can't get myself to give them any money or users
