@ohBananaJoe They’re awful! You know they’ll come, and there’s not a lot you can do!

I guess we’re taking a class now, First Aid for Babies, or something of the kind.

@maique Scary! Glad it turned out well, and that you didn’t freeze.

@AlanGMarz Everything is fine, just a scare, thanks! The baby didn’t even cry or show signs that something was wrong, and my wife just screamed my name while she was taking care of the situation, without thinking about it... It wasn’t a big deal for them.

My heart was jumping because I had no idea what was happening. As soon as I got there the adrenaline died down, everything was ok, thankfully.

But now I know I’ll have to take a first aid course, I want to be ready. Or, at least, feel ready.

@maique Getting certified in first aid is very empowering.

@maique it’s terrifying - we completed a baby first aid course when our first was born but even then when my son started choking on a plum while with me at a zoo I totally panicked. Luckily he coughed it up by himself!

@macgenie I got certified as EFR years ago, while getting my Rescue Diver certification, but that was so long ago I hardly remember a thing about it today. I do remember feeling, at the time, that I was still unsure if I’d be able to help someone who really needed it.

We’re already looking into a baby specific course, and we’re doing it. If something happens (knocking on the proverbial wood) I want to be able to make a difference.

@RossA Oh! That must have been a scary situation, can’t even imagine what must have gone through your mind!

Our situation was a non-event, really, just a scream in the end. But that scream was a wake up call.

@AlanGMarz We should! We should have that subject in high school!

@Gabz If I ever get to do something mildly heroic, I can tell you right now I’ll be wearing both!

@maique @RossA @AlanGMarz @macgenie My problem is I was so focused on the baby part of my combo CPR course, I can't remember what to do now that my kid is big!

@maique in my school all Year 6 (10-11yr olds) complete CPR and basic first aid before they leave. The problem I think, based on my experience (I’m RTACC trained) is that unless you are in the emergency services you come out of the course confident to use it but slowly become less and less confident due to lack of use!

For those in the UK (and possibly other countries?) you can sign up-to GoodSam Responder. This will alert you when an ambulance is called out within a set distance of your location so you can get to them and start CPR. Been called out once so far using this app.

@jeannie I think the problem was that it was my own son - I just panicked and forgot everything. Knew what to do but caught unaware and panicked! I think it would have kicked in after a few more moments but by that time he’d managed to cough it up!

@RossA That’s exactly what happened to me with the EFR certification I had to get. Soon after getting I knew already I wouldn’t be able to help anyone.

That app seems like a great idea! Glad you were able to make a difference!
