I shudder whenever I see someone ask “Do Christians and Muslims worship the same God?

Nevertheless, a deep breath and once more into the breech.

[Passage of time.]

Well, that was the least cringe, most Orthodox, answer I’ve yet seen, but I’m starting to think it’s a lousy question.

@ReaderJohn I heard a missionary of some sort give a talk once and he made the simple observation that Christians are too often primed to defend (and memorize) the differences — you know, to make sure the conscience stays clean and heresy-free — and have basically no ability to see any similarities or nonessential differences, and therefore no ability to have conversations, and therefore no real civility. He talked for an hour, but I’ve repeated this 30-second part for years now.

@tinyroofnail That is a good way of putting it. I mean, obviously I would say this, but I really would love for more Christians to get more into the mental habit of looking for common ground. One of the things I like about all y’all Christians I talk to here is that you are willing to talk!

@JohnBrady That is a good and valid question in this context. Just how much can people differ about the putatively “same God” before they’re in fact talking about a different God?
