all the men actors in the movie looked alike with their beards and long hair. It was hard for me to keep track of who is who. It is just like watching Indian cricket. All the players look identical.
I actually LOL-ed.
@supremus I had the same thought ๐ but as an Indian, he can say those things about Indians. @parag
@supremus Good point and hold that thought. I can explain myself better later in the day on why I disagree. Work deadlines ๐ @parag
@pratik @supremus My own kids have called me racist when I was confused between parents of their friends that belong to a different ethnic group. I have interacted with the kids and I know them well but, have only exchanged pleasantaries with their parents once in a while. How am I supposed to remember them well? Even people at work have confused me with another Indian guy with moustache. I don't think there is any malicious intent there. I completely understand as I confuse them with some other similar looking colleague.
Don't tell me you guys don't get confused with Indian cricket players. The only one I can identify quickly is Rohit Sharma because he is fat. Everyone else looks the same.
@parag I'm with you. As long as its not malicious it can happen with anyone. It is however malicious if someone doesnt learn even after pointing it out to them twice or thrice. @supremus
@supremus @parag Ok. Phew! that was a long day. Putting on my social sciences hat Words can be hurtful, yes, but it all depends on context. Who is saying the word, what tone are they using, whom is it directed at, and yes, as @parag said, what's the intent? The N-word famously has been co-opted by black people, who have turned it into something only the in-group can use. That's based on a strong identity. It achieves the goal also of reminding white people about its history by also reminding them they can never say it.
Similarly, comedians are funny if they punch up and mean if they punch down. It's only acceptable for Jewish comedians to poke fun at their kind given the history, likewise for gay people. It takes real nuance to use the F***t word by a straight person in a comedy bit (CK Louis did it...until he thought everything was ok). Hence "reverse racism" is not a thing, so it's funny when white people claim it. I know white people may feel like they can't make fun of any other races, but then hey, you still got all this privilege to enjoy. Small price, I say.
@supremus @parag Agree. Once you know why something is hurtful and yet you do it then itโs racist.
@parag I haven't read the original epic as I'm illiterate in Tamil but from a cinematic point of view, i think the comet is an harbinger of doom in the chola empire rather than an actual astronomical event!
@cinemapaithiyam What do you mean? My illiteratacy in English can't parse the second part of your sentence. ๐๐ Wouldn't a harbinger of doom be an actual event?
@pratik Come on, man! There are hundreds of people, maybe even thousands that are working on with making this thing and no one thought about this? This bloody comet is an important part of the story line not just sky in the background in Titanic. @cinemapaithiyam
@parag You are facing what I call it as expertolysis niggle. People who are experts at something will always find in movies/TV thats completely off and it will annoy them. Imagine if all doctors started watching House or Grey's Anatomy? @pratik @cinemapaithiyam
@supremus Well.... I get annoyed with even things like when people are drinking a beverage in the show/movie and I can see that the level of liquid changes in non-sequential manner. Or length of the cigarette changes back and forth in the same scene. There are people whose job it is to maintain continuity through shots like that and they utterly fail in doing so. @pratik @cinemapaithiyam
@parag Arent you glad that people whose with those jobs are not competing for our jobs knowing how well they do? :D
@cinemapaithiyam That is alright, man! I have liked Neil for a long time before it became fashionable to hate him. Frankly, I don't even remember why everyone hates him. Anyway, I still like him. So, I don't take this as an insult. @pratik
