What stood out to me in the announcement about io is that there will be a “family” of devices. Maybe one without a screen, a couple with small screens? I assume voice will be a big part of this, but also perhaps not. It could truly surprise us.

@manton based on the scenario they presented, where you have to pull out a device etc it sounded like the exact opposite would be an always listening device that could be prompted or one that is always in front of you like AR glasses.

@manton feels like a bit awkward conversation… full of hyperbolic thoughts but so abstract that it means not much in a sense… I don’t really like those made up conversations in general.

@numericcitizen Isn’t it weird! I mean it’s so well produced but the slick production and talking to ….no one?/us? makes me think of the kind of staged authenticity that comes across as far worse. I think it would have been much better if they’d done a handheld tiktok “hey I’m with Jonny and we’ve got a big announcement”. At the same time, it’s interesting that iPhone app was the white room of nothing, Open AI is the warm earthy cafee.

@ChrisJWilson @numericcitizen I liked the video, but it’s true that it didn’t really say anything. It’s all hype! 🙂

@manton I’m guessing that Ive & Jobs had many of those discussions in their heyday! It’s called « dreaming »…

@ChrisJWilson I had the same thought. A clip-on listening device that connects to a device or provides real-time responses could be an interesting option.

Let’s not forget that Instagram was acquired for $1B in 2012 with just 13 employees—but at least they had a product! 🤣
If future products achieve even a fraction of the iPhone’s success, $6.5B in stock and a merger might turn out to be a bargain for a design team

@Munish I think always listening is interesting. I mean it’s potentially one of those uses of AI that would augment human abilities massively (never forget a conversation!) at the same time, AI meeting summaries can be genuinely funny! I also wonder about the data requirements for something like that (as well as privacy for people near you). I think AR could be potentially more interesting (especially if combined with always listening) as imagine someone mentions a book and then in the corner of your eye you’d see the cover, or perhaps someone said “I think it happened in 2003” and then you have the correct data on your left. At the same time, when that happens in the smartphone and google era, it’s incredibly disruptive and often leads to more ridged thinking rather than exploring the “adjacent possible”.

@Munish I was just reading Jason Snell’s reflections and I made me think of something. He said “people really love their smartphones” and I think that’s true (and part of me wonders if they’re just building an android phone with ChatGPT baked in deeply especially as Sam said “take out their laptop” not smartphone) but I thought of one other device people love: wireless headphones. What if they made a airpod competitor with chatgpt built in? It would need another device too I guess. I really wonder if there’s some other smart device idea that everyone is missing. Probably not though.

@ChrisJWilson It will be a third device to support phone and headphones. Something we will use as an assistant maybe?

I have a love hate relationship with my iPhone. love it for the first year, then moan it slows down and becomes clunky. It does everything I want it to do, but no longer brings me joy. Android is not the way for me, I have tried it before. This is maybe my attitude towards some tech. It has become boring and everything is a subscription.
