Hey, podcast people. If I wanted to record a podcast with multiple people in separate locations when both/all would only have access to an iPhone, how would I go about it? Is it possible?

@Mtt The audio will not be the greatest, if they are using ear buds instead of a real mic, but it’s usable. I have done lots of Micro Monday episodes with people using that. The trick is if you can record their audio into separate tracks for editing. Zoom can record each person separately, I know. Ideally, you would get people to record their own tracks locally, but I’m not sure how that could be done with an iPhone while you are using it for Zoom or whatever conferencing tool.

@jean Yeah, that’s the problem I’m running into. If no one has access to a computer for the recording (including host), no easy way to get quality recordings that I see. The old Anchor app (bought by Spotify) used to have a way to do it, but I can’t find an alternative to it yet.

@Mtt would the recording and you all talking to each other be on the same iPhone?

@Burk No, it would be different people in different locations, all using iPhones.

@Mtt The biggest issue is having one method for you all to talk to one another in real-time and also record that audio. It also matters a lot if you want to edit afterward. One easy way to accomplish decent quality could be to do a Zoom call and record it to the cloud. Zoom has the option to record everyone on one track as well as each person on a separate track.

@Burk Didn't realize Zoom could do that on mobile. That's the best option I see so far. Spotify's podcast app (formerly Anchor) can do it as well, but I don't want to deal with them. Thanks.

@Mtt @burk the multitrack recording is only for the local recording on a desktop, cloud recording is a mixed track of all participants. I've heard people using Riversde but can't vouch for it personally.

@joshua Do these settings not enable it on cloud?

@Mtt you'll have to give it a try. My personal experience says no, and a Google search said no, but they do update and release new feautres often.

@Mtt I'm former-commercial radio and former-church sound guy, so my brain is very ready to talk audio. If Zoom doesn't work out, and even if it did, I would separate the recording and the monitoring (aka the call). Have the podcast conversation on whatever devices you can, but then have a separate phone recording a voice memo locally. Sync it up in post and you've got local audio for a remote podcast.

@Mtt I listen to several podcasts that do Zoom meetings and record the audio from that. I have zero issues as a listener of it is lots of discussions going on and not many monologues.

@joshua My biggest issue is the amount of non-tech people who would be involved. Trying to make it as seamless and straightforward as possible.

While not a sound tech, I’ve been a ProPresenter (and MediaShout and EasyWorship and ChurchView before that) guy for 25 years. Lots of tie in with sound stuff, but never that directly.

@Mtt that's my reasoning behind two devices, most common folk could get their head around that. Just record a voice memo on one and make a phone call on another.
