@MrKapowski I was afraid of this. The first movie was a highlight of my childhood. The Eddie Murphy versions made me laugh, mostly because Chris Rock did an excellent guinea pig. The previews for the new movie made me cringe. Too much!
@macgenie @MrKapowski I remember seeing the original as a kid in a large screen cinema in Britain that probably doesn't exist anymore. There was a magic in that film that made me come out of the theater making me believe that _I _ could speak with animals...and I continued to believe that even when my attempts were not successful.
Years later I found out that it was made just up the road from where I lived, at least the opening harbour scenes.
This view is probably clouded by the nostalgia of looking back on my youth, but I sometimes wonder if we rely too much on modern CGI, and not enough on good story telling.
Disney's The Jungle Book is the same for me. I didn't think that the remake was bad, but for me nothing will beat the original.
@crossingthethreshold Good point. And I didn't go see the new Jungle Book, or the new Lion King, Aladdin, and probably others, for that reason, I now realize.
@macgenie Yes to the original and Eddie Murphy versions!
To this day, my wife and I still occasionally quote a line from the Eddie Murphy movie: "Rub my butt rub my butt pleeeeeez rub my butt!"
@macgenie Need to watch it again!
