In an attempt to turn lemons into lemonade, Iā€™m reviewing our community guidelines to see what we can improve. We can do a better job of highlighting that Micro.blog can be a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community. What I said in the Kickstarter video in 2017 is still true: indie blogs, safe community.

@manton I've just reread the community guidelines and they look good to me. Speaking as an (almost) 70 year old lesbian feminist I feel this is a safe and welcoming space where the people I choose to follow are respectful of others. In general people I follow seem to be trying to build a positive community here. Micro.Blog is the home for my blog and I expect it will be for a good long time to come.

@manton There is a reference to a Community Manager in the guidelines, but from what I understand, noone who works at Micro.blog is in that dedicated role. Can you clarify who is currently reviewing the community@micro.blog email address?

@nsmsn Good catch, I'm fixing that now. The emails go to me right now.

@manton I don't think the disagreement you're responding to was about community guidelines. It didn't even occur on this platform, even if you and the platform are the explicit objects of it.

@markstoneman That's true, it wasn't about the guidelines, but it spiraled into a criticism of Micro.blog specifically and whether we are communicating enough about what we believe in.

@manton One small place to do that: improve this menu and the guidelines on the help page. Maybe improve what can gain visibility here too.

My LGBTQ+ posts show up automatically in the šŸ³ļøā€āš§ļøšŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ discover feed, but why not add that feed to the dropdown menu?

(The overall range of topics available on the help page is also rather narrow.)

@markstoneman It does seem like a good time to change the emoji in that popup! We used to rotate them out every once in a while, but I haven't done that in a long time.

@markstoneman I think doing that would be a very good idea.

@manton I see you made the change now. (But you missed the + after lgtbq in the dropdown menu, although it is present everywhere else.)
