Thoughts on Wind and Truth: manton.org
@manton I am bookmarking this. I’m about halfway through and am so intrigued where things are headed.
@manton It’s been awhile since I finished Wind and Truth, and I think I generally agree with your assessment. Adolin’s storyline is just perfect. I think Kaladin stole a little bit of Szeth’s thunder, but I enjoyed their interaction. I’m excited for the future of Renarin and Rlain and Lift. Shallan will be interesting in the future. Like you, I struggle with Jasnah. It’s clear that Sanderson wanted her to suffer an existential crisis going into the space between arcs, and I would have preferred a better one. I’m just not certain what it should have been. A long time to wait until Book 6, but there’s always more to read - I hope Arc 2 is outlined more up front (I doubt he could do that not knowing he’d become popular enough to finish it) - even if it takes more time to start, I think it will lead to tighter books. Nonetheless, I very much enjoyed it because it was 1300 pages with characters I’ve spent so much time with.
@dgreene196 Great points. And yeah, I love these characters and if any of them had been cut, of course I’d be sad about it too, and maybe I would’ve wished the book was longer! 🙂
@manton Have you read any of James Rollins’ Moonfall Saga? I’ve enjoyed his thrillers for years, and he wrote fantasy under a (different) pseudonym in the past, but it’s pretty good. Book 3 of 4 comes out next week. Different writer from Sanderson, but I think it’s a strong series so far.
@manton I finally finished it. I loved Adolin’s storyline. It was so good. I completely agree about Jasnah’s storyline. Despite her ascendancy to Radiant early in the books, she really hasn’t progressed much. Kaladin … I truly enjoyed the dialogues between Nale and Kaladin and the chapter where the Wind helps redeem Nale was beautiful. But you are right on the lack of movement in Kaladin’s characterisation. I found the ending satisfying since we all knew that there was a second-arc in the works. Dalinar was a complex character and I found his ending satisfying.
@KyleEssary Glad you liked it. There were so many great moments, and the ending has grown on me too.
