@kimberlyhirsh My advisors kept telling me this, every time I mentioned a non-scholarly thing I wanted to do (the assistant director of a residence college, go home for Christmas). Eventually it sunk in that my personality was not suited for laser focus. They probably should have booted me after my oral exams, and now I think it would have been less traumatic than working on a never-finished dissertation for two years.

@jean I was very lucky to have an advisor who understood that laser focus wasn't an option for me.
