Things that people say that either put me on guard or switch me off ….

I don’t mean to interrupt …

With all due respect …

To be honest …

@JohnPhilpin Instant time-wasting. This is one of those things I never realised until I just read it but all three of those just make me think of people wasting time.

@simonwoods and also indicate precisely the opposite of what they are saying …

I don’t mean to interrupt … yes you do, otherwise you wouldn't be.

*With all due respect *… generally followed by a subtle (or not) dissing.

To be honest … implication being that generally they aren’t.

@JohnPhilpin “with all due respect” I take to mean, “We’ve thought about how much respect this idea deserves, and the following is our conclusion...”

@JohnPhilpin «I don’t mean to interrupt …» = Well I am in a hurry, so I exercise my right to interrupt at will.

«With all due respect …» = I respect my dog more than you, so here I go…

I could be wrong.
