@manton agree - but what I am really writing about is how you embedded the conversation as a link in your post ... how did you do that?

@JohnPhilpin You can get the link to a conversation on the web by clicking the date/time under a reply. (Going to make this easier soon.)

@manton I still need to watch it which is crazy considering the original is probably my favourite film ever.

@colinwalker I wish I had seen it in the theater, but glad to have a quiet night without a bunch of distractions. Feels like the kind of movie you want to pay attention to.

@manton and would be nice if the conversation were in chronological order rather than reverse order as that one seems to be.

@davereed Thanks, I've wondered if we should change this across the platform for conversations.

@adiabatic Right, I like the consistency too, and strictly reverse-chronological for the main timeline is important in the age of algorithmic timelines, which we don't want here. Hmm.

@adiabatic @manton @davereed I grumble and shake my head about top-posting whenever I see it, but have generally conserved the energy once spent complaining about it.

As for the conversations, the current setup is OK if the convo is short enough to see it all on the screen, but otherwise I’m always scrolling down to see where it began and then start reading back up. The only time I see the newest-first as being a benefit is if you’ve read the whole thing before and just want to see the latest replies…. It’s never going to be perfect for every usecase/entry point to a convo, but to me making the convo appear naturally is the more important thing.

A timeline is different than a conversation, so I don’t see it as being confusing to have them ordered differently. And web forums, many email clients, and even social-media behemoths work this way: a newest first list of topics/convos, with the contents of convos themselves appearing oldest-first. So I think people are sufficiently used to the differences/context-switching.

@adiabatic Hate top-posting for email ... but I'm old

@smokey I still carefully quote inline and never top post unless it’s a message between me and one other person. For those I top post all day.

@manton I was actually surprised that Micro took the reverse chronological approach. For some reason I expected the conversation from top to bottom. Feels awkward on this platform to have to scroll all the way down to catch up.

@manton I’d love chronological order for all of M.b! And as bonus, don’t scroll the main timeline to the latest, leave it where I left it off and let me catch up (within reason, I realize at some point you want to flush the old stuff).

@oyam I completely agree. At times point I tend to loose so much of activity. I guess I typically like to be a completionist.

@jhull yes! I knew it was something, but couldn’t put my finger on it. Starts of conversation should be at the top no?

@adiabatic @davereed I am ok with new stuff on top (I too prefer it). But I think I want my timeline to not scroll to the top. I know I guess too much of a pro-use, specific requirement.

@manton must have too many more priority items on his list (reply all, hopefully).

@manton fwiw i am very much in favour od conversations being oldest on top. Even if you think of a classic blog, where posts are reverse-chronoligical, the comments would be oldest first with newer ones being posted at the bottom, so it is rooted in the same design

@smokey completely agree. I’ll typically see a reply in my timeline and want to catch up on the convo first. The thumb dance to scroll down to the first post is annoying. I’m also not sure how @-replys should be implemented. Twitter’s “list all participants forever” approach is obviously a burden. But on the other hand, I’m not replying just to you in this post.

@manton I either don’t understand how to use the micro.blog timeline in the app or I don’t enjoy it. Currently I open the app, scroll to the bottom, read the post and, if new to me, click to see more, repeat as needed, read up to too. It’s not pleasant. Am I doing it wrong?

@sirshannon Can you explain a little more specifically what isn't pleasant and how you'd prefer that it work? Also, web or iOS or Mac? Thanks. (Send an email to help if that's easier.)

@manton I guess my only frames of reference are my RSS reader (sorted: unread, oldest first), twitter (Twitterrific loads with last read on screen, newer items off the top of the screen), and instagram (the worst of both worlds: loads at topmost item but random sorting).

@sirshannon I sort of gave up on caring about Instagram because it requires to much work. Micro.blog isn’t as bad but requires too much work to find where I left off. I tend to give up and just read from the bottom of first items loaded. It is teaching me to not care too much :(

@manton So in the, "do we support tags, or not" debate I'll just say this: bladerunner might be the coolest tag ever used on any blog in history. I want to use it so badly it hurts.
