🔗 Japanese Nail Houses.

Spectacular idea of how just one person can stand up and be counted.

@JohnPhilpin While I applaud individuality, I usually don’t when it’s at everyone else’s expense. There has been some cases here too, where development has been halted for years by a single person or family opposing expropriation laws. Although some development should never have been allowed in the first place, they do make sense in most cases, IMO.

@odd Yes. I think. Would be interesting to know the back stories to the building featured in the article.

@odd @JohnPhilpin I am a fan of the feisty holdouts. It’s a bit like the few leaves strewn in the garden, a little wrinkle in the fabric, a judicious tear, etc. It’s the start of whole new worlds of thought.

@mejh a bit of judicious google image search - and indeed you seem to be very right ...

I have commented over on the Substack and asked why they didn’t just call the piece Chinese Nail Houses?

@mbkriegh For me, I guess it depends. My reference is mostly new, and safer roads, in a country of many mountains and bergs, where economical/ecological considerations, and connecting the widespread population is important. Now, I have to say I am not very happy about taking arable land for road construction, OTOH driving hours upon hours on a narrow and unpredictable road has lead to a lot of accidents throughout the years, and I wish the expropriation laws would be more generous. If there’s a place with 20 houses, and 19 has agreed to getting relocated, often for something better, then what about the single remaining house? In other cases though, it’s the developers that operate far beyond their limits, and make the living a nightmare for close neighbors for years while they are say making a tunnel, (one recent case), so it’s not a 100% either/or for me.

@odd different things at stake I guess. Where I live corporate and strip mall sameness threatens all. So I like the tear in the fabric. But I get your point and honestly, I am not all one way or the other either. A lot of people complain about any development. Some of it’s ok, some not.
