Bandwagon jumped onto.
I still don’t get why people that know better still flock to use a URL that is meant to be ‘them’ that may - or may not - be available in the future

@JohnPhilpin From an interview Anthony Casalena did with The Verge:
... right now, a lot of Squarespace clients think of Instagram and other social sites as their homepage — and they bring people to their websites just to complete transactions because they have more payment options on the web.
I don't think all of us on the "website-first" side of the public web have truly internalised the degree to which the silo social media industry has changed how we, as a society, think about the web.
@JohnPhilpin Also: I did a quick search for Pinboard to see if there was any news or maybe an opinion piece doing the rounds (since I saw yet another person talking about trying to export from the service) and not only was it difficult to find anything from the past ten years of "News" results but the search results ranked this other Pinboard service close to the top.
Newsletters are a good example as something that has grown into what most people would think of as a hosted service, with its self-hosting roots basically ignored. And, to be honest, I don't blame most people John... I mean, life can be difficult enough.
@JohnPhilpin @SimonWoods This will sound snarky but this looks like Wordpress is selling a limited WP theme as if it's a separate service?
@SimonWoods to me URL doesn’t necessarily imply web site .. in fact just recently have been consolidating around my single Philpin URL .. so for example …
Replace mastodon with your social media app of choice … though it is a WIP
@JohnPhilpin @gregmoore Is it a limited service? I assumed it was the usual WordPress hosted service but they're just highlighting how you can use the theme to make your own link-in-bio page.
@JohnPhilpin Yep, I agree. Using your custom domain to redirect to a hosted service is a great way to take advantage of the service without confusing people in the event of changes. It's one of the reasons I'm very happy that Manton created redirects in Micro.blog, even though that feature doesn't get much attention.
@SimonWoods The theme appears to be the only limited part. It’s just a normal Wordpress.com account with a limited “link in bio” theme.
Nothing particularly wrong with this, it’s just surprising to me. I’d rather have a full website if I’m paying for one but that’s just me.
