As a privacy advocate (yes, this is a term that fits me at this point I think) I have a hard time replacing Google Maps. There isn’t another app I know that gives you quick results for searches in an area when you’re on the go, complete with instructions and sharing the trip in real-time.

@jtr I finally bit the bullet, removed Waze (which I used all the time as a Lyft driver), and I just use Apple Maps now. It required retraining, but I’ve been satisfied enough with the mapping, estimates, and sharing. I am sure there are some things that were better, but I have Google/Waze amnesia now and I don’t want to be cured.

@jtr 🍎🗺️ for me … but I appreciate if you are on Linux, Windows, Android .. that doesn’t help.

@jtr I can understand that. I've been trying to replace Google Maps using a few options. Organic Maps is my favorite thus far.

- Organic Maps organicmaps.app/
- Magic Earth magicearth.com/
- OsmAnd osmand.net/
- GMaps WebView gitlab.com/divested-mobile/map
- AlpiMaps github.com/Akylas/alpimaps

@jean I like the look and feel of Apple Maps the best. The only thing I have a hard time with is how close their visuals are for turn advice. I miss so many turns using Apple Maps, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of retraining my brain coming from Google Maps.

@jean I also have apple maps on my iPhone, but I don't consider this a much better solution in terms of privacy. It just replaces Google with Apple, my data stills sits on some hardware somewhere. It's a good thing to at least have one of those though :)

@adamsdesk OsmAnd and the rest (as far as I checked) don't come close to the data Google maps has, unfortunately. Several times I had to look up the business online to get the address and look that up, because the location was wrong om OsmAnd. I'm also registered with openmaps.org and I try to contribute information when I can.

Organic Maps looks more polished, but still lacking a lot of info.

@jtr I agree until it comes to Organic Maps. I've had it work well. Is it perfect or as polished as Google Maps, no. However it gets the job done. Heck, can always use GMaps WebView in cases the rest don't work for you.

@adamsdesk been trying organic maps for the last couple of days and I like it. The UI is intuitive and not as nearly as cluttered as OsmAnd. Still missing locations next to Google maps but better. Adding missing locations to open maps is also easier.
