I have left the tracking data in this URL for a reason Workplace Productivity: Are You Being Tracked? It’s the NYT - but comes as a ‘gift post’ from Dave Pell and Next Draft. It’s a topic near and dear to my heart … having refused to join a company that was doing exactly this a few year... john.philpin.com

@JohnPhilpin This sort of tracking was a big part of my decision to leave my last two jobs (in one I was asked to implement it, with the reassurance I was ‘trusted’ and wouldn’t be part of the monitoring).

It’s incredibly corrosive and counter-productive, and I can’t help but feel it will be at least a significant footnote in future social histories about the failure of capitalism.

@jamescousins yeah … I read something the other day .. a CEO commenting that his marketing department think they are paid by the word …

Over in the programming department - this leads to inefficient code - same reasoning.

@JohnPhilpin It’s utterly bizarre. There is so much research evidence on human motivation versus a tech solution that condenses human labour to a metric. By making it seem easy and measurable, the tech solution will win 99% of the time. But it’s the 1% of companies that don’t that will ways make the difference.
