I don’t think Google can launch a new successful product anymore. Surely the weight of its failures is more than its successes?

Google is shutting down Google Stadia and refunding everyone’s money www.techradar.com/news/brea…

@Bruff I think even if Stadia had been an idea that could succeed, Google's reputation for shutting things down doomed it. No one wanted to sink money into a platform that could be taken away from them any time. (Although I did see one comment this morning from someone who said that if he'd known he'd get full refunds on everything, he actually would have gotten into it more, haha)

@jayeless Interesting to hear about that commenter. Maybe the best thing Google can do to fix their reputation is to outline upfront what would happen when they shutdown the service. That way people can decide whether trying the service out is worth the effort (might be a good idea for other companies to do this as well).

@lmika Yeah, I agree. Outlining scenarios like that definitely gives people more security.

@frostedechoes Hmm, I dunno, maybe I'm not the average consumer (well, I'm probably not tbh) but to me that shows a level of maturity. It's obvious not all products work out, and I don't trust people who are just so hyped about their own endeavour that they refuse to consider theirs might be one of the ones that doesn't work out. Also, in the case of Google specifically, their reputation is so far gone that I think they need to start doing this – people are already not using their products over this issue. @lmika

@Bruff Seems like a big problem for Google because they were creating a platform that game developers were expecting would be around for a while. Very costly for Google, and developers burned like this will never trust them again.

@jayeless @frostedechoes Yes, that's exactly how I feel as well. Might also be an opportunity for small companies to show how they differ from their larger competitors. Easy way to gain some trust upfront from those who wouldn't normally consider such products.

@frostedechoes Blogger still exists! I'm a regular reader of a blog published via Blogger. True, I don't know of any others...

@manton 100% what’s most surprising is just how common product failure seems to be at Google now.

@frostedechoes @lmika @jayeless well, apart from being a surveillance company, I minimize my use of Google products because of this, too.

@frostedechoes @bruff 💯for Feedbin, definitely a service I won’t be without at this point. Their newly added Airshow app for podcasts seals the deal even more.
