Do you still have a reason to stay on Twitter?
@pratik a lot of people I like, and who are going to find another home challenging, are still there. Hilarious comedy accounts. My fiends are there. I want to leave, but there’s still enough there that’s it ps worthwhile for me to keep checking in.
@pratik Yes. Regardless of “that news”, very many people I know still actively exist only on the birdsite. Lots of space news also continues to break out there, and I don’t mean just big news, which will always trickle elsewhere, but other small yet important updates from scientisits leading a certain space mission/instrument, say.
@uncertainquark Then everyone is culpable in my eyes. This is the classic “At least the trains run on time”.
@pratik If I start requesting people to shift to the many other options, all my time will end up doing that and not space stuff, and still not work. Not to mention that many people will think why am I “bothering” them with something they have no priority or personal importance for.
@uncertainquark I’m not trying to convince anyone. I leave coz I don’t believe in supporting that place anymore. Hence I judge the people who still choose to coz…reasons.
@pratik Existing there doesn’t automatically equate to supporting all of Twitter. If so, the same could be argued for, say, people using Macs instead of Linux despite Apple being peak greedy and hypocritical while good, ethical Linux being the Mastodon/Micro.blog equivalent. But we don’t see users just flocking to Linux and declaring war at Apple. At some point everyone just wants to get their work done. For everyone, some sacrifices for ethics are more possible than others, and that’s where they speak up most but they too have their own share of compromises, just in another category.
@pratik I have a few friends who won’t leave until the whole thing burns down. That said, I follow a list of those people via RSS. No plans to interact or post there myself. I stopped crossposting a week or so ago and changed my name to my mastodon instance over two weeks ago. Folks know where to find me. Some have.
@pratik A few years back, I decided it only added anxiety and little value, so I deleted it. When I wonder what someone has tweeted, I go to their individual account and read what they’ve said.
@pratik we had this conversation a few days ago. I was amazed how passionate people were with responses. Twitter to me is a supporting research, search engine and to get customer service support quickly. Beyond that …no use anymore. I thought that “figure”, was only being reintroduced, to increase fun twitter toilet roll quotes lol 😂
@Munish Yup, I’m surprised too. I can understand everyone’s tolerance levels are different but objectively Musk+Trump is something I can never associate with.
@uncertainquark
> For everyone, some sacrifices for ethics are more possible than others.
Essentially it boils down to this, right? Anyway, I was genuinely curious and didn’t want to come across as a scold. After all, I know people judge me (e.g., perhaps Linux people) but I’m not trying to convince them not to.
@skoobz @davidnixon The network effects will linger a while. I thought about it when I quit Facebook but some people I was in touch there found me elsewhere and with others, the connection was tenuous at best so I’m sure neither of us are missing each other.
@KyleEssary That may be one way to use it sparingly. You can do that even without an account since most people are public. But yup, it’s not worth making it part of your regular hangout.
@pratik nope, but I follow a bounch of accounts using a list and visiting this list every other day or so. bunch of people that will not move. Just like people still blog at blogger, I am sure lots will tweet until the end of times.
@supremus Yup, that’s one of the reason A was still lurking on there but in fact, she texted me that she was gonna quit when she got “the” news. We have a strong & visceral hate for that man in this household and will never associate with anything he is part of. I have thoughts on how the public agencies have surrendered their communication to Twitter but that’s for later.
@pcora I was following a few people via RSS but would be ocassionally tempted to visit the site to browse threads of some viral tweet. Deleted the app now. But I noticed half of the people I was following via RSS have also now quit so perhaps a sign of things to come.
@pratik I’ve had two groups of people adding me. One are m.b users finding me though the social.lol feed, most likely. The others are locals, probably finding me when someone else they know mentions me. Both are gradual, but I’m good with that.
