@Gaby Tori Amos "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Miley Cyrus has also done some good covers over the past few years.
@Gaby Lovesong is a song from The Cure, covered fabulously by Adele and 311.
Some of my favourite covers: Oh Well (Fleetwood Mac) by Deep Purple, Blister in the sun (Violent Femmes) by Nouvelle Vague, Where is my mind (Pixies) by Maxence Cyrin and Nothing else matters (Metalica) by Chris Stapleton
@jeroensangers rom The Cure, damn that is true
@Gaby A couple of my faves are Placebo's cover of "Running Up That Hill" and the Editors' cover of "Lullaby". Also last year here the Wiggles' cover of "Elephant" was a huge sensation, and it's also pretty great 🤣
@Gaby I find most cover songs boring. But when it’s done well, they tend to be played a lot.
Jeff Buckley’s cover of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen is great. Hendrix did an unbelievable version of All Along the Watchtower by Bob Dylan. Marilyn Manson had some good ones as well with Personal Jesus and Sweet Dreams.
@hjertnes Maybe.
I’ve heard a couple that I like, but many covers of that song I find to be just terrible.
@Gaby I also love to see (hear) how different artists interpret songs differently. Favourites: Johnny Cash singing Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, and Aurora doing Teardrop by Massive Attack.
@helgeg @gaby Cash's cover of Hurt was riddled with emotion, one of the best covers I've ever heard bar none. Ironically, I've also heard a great rendition of Solitary Man by one of the crooners in the Ratpack.
@pimoore @helgeg @hjertnes @frostedechoes @furstenberg @jayeless one cover that is a favourite of mine that forgot to mention was Shinedown’s cover of Simple Man from Lynyrd Skynyrd
@pimoore Also his interpretation of Sunday Morning Coming Down by Kris Kristoffersson and It ain’t Me, Babe by Bob Dylan.
@Gaby I like the Lorde cover of Tears for Fears as well. And Cash’s “Hurt” as well as many of his others, like covering Sting’s “I Hung My Head”. I like Buckley’s “Hallelujah”, but I am tiring of everyone covering that song these days. Aretha’s “Respect”, of course. If some fresh thoughts pop into my head, I’ll add more.
My least favorite is Rascal Flatts covering Tom Cochrane’s “Life Is a Highway”. It baffles me that probably most people think that is a Radcal Flatts song when the Cochrane version was played nonstop on the radio when it was released. The Cochrane version was the definition of overplayed and it’s amazing to me that some other artist could be more associated with the song than Cochrane. What’s worse, though, is the cover adds nothing to the song. It’s almost identical, but with a mild country twang. What was the point?
@frostedechoes I'm from another generation, haven't followed pop music for decades. But maybe my most happy-making pop song is the Beach Boys' "I Can Hear Music" -- which is a cover of the Ronettes' (inferior) original.
@Gaby The Devlin instrumental of "All along the watch tower" used in the Young Pope was great. Opening credits brilliant too.
@johnjohnston @gaby Bear McCreary's All Along the Watch Tower in Battlestar Galactica (remake) was spine-chilling — partly for where the plot was at the time but also because of his arrangement and the instrumentation. www.youtube.com/watch
