I mean, isn’t automatic theme switching part of the OS? Built in the system’s settings? Why is instead part of the app’s subscription? I know it’s only 5 USD a year for something that’s, again, already part of the OS.

Than gain, what the heck do I know?

@Gaby paying for support of things built in the base OS is, in my opinion, not a good thing. I refuse to do it.

@Gaby its 5 bucks...

@hjertnes I know and that is not the issue I have paid for this app when it was 1 time purchase, then 10 $ more when upgraded, 5 bucks for annual thing -- fine! The issue its charging for something that is already in the system...

@Gaby it’s interesting how you describe that. For me, it’s a shame because OS apps had this ability way before Apple implemented any kind of theme switching. When they added it, I knew this would throw developers down yet another hole how they can’t make money by simply charging for themes, or otherwise. Some apps charge for extra icons, yet it’s something built into the OS. Apple might make that more automated in future… which again will deprive your nice developer of even charging for that.

@vincent well, to me, the way I see it and this doesn’t make it an absolute truth, extra icons yea charge me, different dark and light themes, yes by all means I am a sucker for that. But if every app in the echo system it’s supposed to match what apple implemented then, I don’t know, it’s hard to sallow. At least give the all the ability to match the systems settings, if you want to sell me different dark themes and light themes, I would gladly pay for them, I have. Same with accessibility features, it’s like charging me for the app to match font sizes or something like that. Maybe tho isn’t a fair comp but it’s kind of where I am coming from. That all being said, I did pay the 5$

Hope this makes sense 😁

@Gaby oh… and don’t forget… Apple take 30/15% from that $5. Now if the developer takes USD exchange rate, should be ok… otherwise he’ll get an even lower rate after conversion. Then he’s gotta pay tax… and social etc etc. So maybe $1 - 2/year ends up in the pocket.

@Gaby ha! Awesome. And you know, your point is actually totally valid. A basic theme for both OS appearances should be a standard thing… same with websites really, I expect that.

@vincent yup, for this app in particular, I would gladly pay more than 5$ a year, I think it deserves it. I probably didn’t express myself well and it came out as a complaint rather than an observation 😅

@Gaby my interpretation is that they added a dark theme and used a terrible way to describe it.

But. Here is my two cents about this and every single other subscription for apps out there.

You pay them not for specific features but to make it possible to maintain it without having to download a new app and all of that.

The whole pay once and never again system that came with iOS In 2008 have never worked out and never will

@hjertnes correct, which is why I pay subscription for apps that I use everyday regardless of the features, for example Drafts, Tweetbot, Ulysses and whichever podcast app I am using at the moment 😅 just to mention a few.

@Gaby @numericcitizen "part of the OS" is complicated. Are you both concerned that this was a relatively easy thing for the developer to implement and so they shouldn't be charging for it? Almost like they're taking credit for Apple's work? Or is it something else?

re: Due @hjertnes is almost right; the developer is in fact charging for theme switching, since they never had it in the app previously. In fact, they only had a single theme for a long time. As relates to charging for this: the developer is practically alone and so I would say the work was even harder and thus even more worth the cost. In this instance, as with Gab, if I could I would pay much more for the app.

@simonwoods I guess this is why at the end I said “what do I know?”

It was just an observation since I haven’t seen apps charging for dark themes previously to (whichever is implemented dark mode)
