Mastodon quote posts draft: manton.org
@manton I wonder if the Mastodon approach is looking for a way to make things “controllably viral”? Try to head of the chaotic doxxing and mob-harassment we now see instantly from the Muskxites but still be able to “go viral” without the old centralized aggregators like slashdot of the early web days before the walled social media gardens of algorithm amplification?
@Codercanuck I think that is their goal and it's worthwhile. Mastodon also has algorithm amplification with the Explore tab, although to your point it is somewhat controllable.
@manton the Mastodon concept of a private account only allows accounts you approve to view them. This unfortunately complicates and limits their options around quotes. Not sure what “responsibility” other federated platforms have to “respect” this.
@briandigital Yes, I expect Mastodon won't let you quote post those, but it's easy to imagine that content leaking out to other platforms. It is really hard to have actually private posts on the web.
@manton Manton, I love you but you and I fundamentally disagree on the value of boosts, shares and quote posts. I value those things when other people do them — they bring to my attention posts that I might not have otherwise seen.
@manton You said:
our web UI for embedding a post uses Quotebacks
Where is this UI? I just posted a quote and I didn’t see anything about embedding or Quotebacks.
I’ve used Quotebacks, but the long way round.
What am I missing?
@devilgate Under Bookmarks - click Embed on a bookmark, copies a Quoteback to the clipboard. I think this is what @manton means.
@devilgate - or for that matter, any post on the timeline here - clicking Embed copies a Quoteback.
@mmetcalfe @devilgate Yep, that’s it. It should be on most pages now. Not in the native apps yet, though.
@manton @mmetcalfe Ah, I see. Thanks. So 'embed' only works for other Micro.blog posts, not websites more broadly. For those we still have to do Quotebacks the long way round? Fair enough.
@devilgate You can paste the code into a blog post. If you use the totalising micro.blog workflow, you can bookmark sites, write up responses, get the embed code rather than say plain blockquote @manton
@mmetcalfe Shit, when you share to MB there’s a ‘Save bookmark’ option! I never noticed that before.
