I’m definitely one of these “language is fluid, too bad for you” sorts of people, but I also often get itchy when business-y language spreads.

Which is a long way of saying that I understand the way that folks use “ask” and “requests” interchangeably…but still hate it.

@jw In my experience, 80% of people who use ask as a noun are bloviating asshats.

Still, this is anecdotal data. More research is required. 😉

I heard one of my awesome coworkers use it today; I think when you end up doing a lot of fundraising or project managing, it becomes a thing.

@jw @cheri “Ask” as a noun is a funny one. “Request” is also a verb, and I wonder if it got nouned a long time ago. 😇

We use “ask” a lot in fundraising, and to my ears it sounds more straightforward than request. But definitely jargony...

To concur with @jw‘s original point, I do enjoy the pliability of language. But I also enjoy shaking my cane at buzzword buffoonery.

@macgenie @cheri @jw I, too, am a "language is fluid" sort of person. That said, I don’ mind "ask" as a noun, although I will never ever use it that way myself. 😂 What does bug me a little is people who argue both sides of the language fluidity debate—i.e., “certain words have crossed a threshold to be used differently than in the past, but other ones never will”. 😱🤯😂
