Let’s start another Micro Monday roll call: photography enthusiasts, click reply to this post to add yourself to this informal list. If you also share photos to Glass and/or Flickr, let us know that too! πŸ“·

@jean Tap, tap, tap. Is this thing on? I usually have at least one person for roll call by now. I’m worried because I initially posted this during our server hiccup earlier. I know we have folks passionate about photography out there!

@jean Planning to post more photos here (on micro.blog) but for the most part, I'm still most active on Flickr. Flickr was my first "web 2.0" love.

@jean πŸ™‹πŸ½β€β™€οΈ I enjoy taking photos with my iPhone or my Fuji X-T2. Most simply stay in Photos app; some reach Micro.Blog and a very rare few are printed and put on the wall.

@Gaby @pratik so ... since your using Glass (means ice cream in Swedish), what's your impression? What sets it apart from for example Flickr, Instagram, micro.blog, etc? Why would I start using Glass? Who are the intended users, other photographers?

I'm a bit skeptical about yet another photo sharing site and I haven't really understood what "problem" Glass tries to solve.

@jean πŸ‘‹ I've been a practicing photographer for a long time. I'm on Glass and Flickr. The latter usually only gets photos once in a while these days. I like Glass and the promise of a photography focused community. A few days ago I made this twitter thread with videos of what I like about Glass.

@jean Here! Been shooting on and off since taking photography in high school and developing my own b&w shots. At this point I'm using a Fujifilm X-T4 and absolutely loving it. Hoping to get up into the mountains and out to the beaches this fall for some longer excursions, but for now I'm loving exploring my neighborhood through the lens.

@jemostrom I think @gaby had an excellent long-form post about it yesterday or day before. I recall seeing a post in the Discover section too. Both captured my thoughts well. I still have some concerns about it but the presence of an Export All Photos in Settings makes me feel better.

@pratik @jemostrom It has a very nice interface for just looking at photos, swipe right if you want to see who the photographer is, tap to see EXIF and comments, if you care. Very uncluttered. I really like the way they display people you can follow with little thumbnails of their photos.

@cm Glass has encouraged me to post the photos that I’m proud of. Since I began the big moving and sale process, almost everything in my Photos library is utilitarian records of furniture, rooms, items for sale, new apartment photos, and screenshots of stuff I need to buy. I had to go pretty far back to find something worth showing to strangers. I’m going to be looking for more photo ops again. And of course, cross-post back to Micro.blog, where my fun and silly stuff will still reside exclusively.

@jean I post on micro.blog and repost for my friends and family on Fb. I gave up on Flickr, 500px, etc. I just like to post for people to enjoy, and the others seem so competitive to me. And the bulk of my photos come from dSLR -> Linux -> website. Apps almost never fail to disappoint me.

@jean @jemostrom. Yup! I love it too. They need to make it better to view landscape-oriented photos but I like that you can't add any filters or do any editing. It's just upload and write a short description, no tags or hashtags. I think Bokeh has missed the boat.

@rom Corel’s AfterShot Pro. It is a reasonable substitute for Lightroom and the like, as long as you dont want to do too much editing. They have the standard level controls, but the clone an healing features arent great. Recently, it doesnt seem to like my external drive, but that might be the drives fault. All in all, it is fairly effective.

@pratik Right, yeah. I don’t think it’s a zero-sum situation. Instead, I think there is more than enough room for multiple indie social networks and that the β€œmissed boat” mentality no longer reflects the way people approach these things.

@jean I have a Nikon DSLR and a Fujifilm X100F. Honestly, between my iPhone 12 and my Fuji, I don’t really take my DSLR out these days. I’ve recently started to post to Pixelfed, and it’s been nice to find a small community there. Flickr and 100px always seemed too intense for me. I don’t even know what Glass is!

@jean @pgkr +1 for Glass from me. Great UI. Similar principles as Micro.blog. Once they let us use a custom domain, it will be perfect. Also love that (selective) cross-posting from Glass to Micro.blog is done very well and super-easy.

About 15 years ago I enjoyed attempting artful photographs on my digital camera and posting them to Flickr. Once the "smart" phone became more popular, the art of photography shifted and lost its "specialness", in my opinion. This past summer I got rid of my "smart" phone and go a Light phone. No camera, no internet, no noise. Just basic call and text. If I am out and see something I would want to take a picture of, I remember that I don't have a device in my bag to do so, and simply enjoy it with my eyes and hope to remember what I saw (or what I felt when I was looking at it).
