@maique Updates are fine, don’t worry. My wife was a smoker when I first started dating her, it’s incredibly hard to give up.

@maique that’s great, well done!

My dad came home one day and just announced he had stopped. He later joked he took up toothpicks instead. His best strategy was he’d never smoked in the bedroom and lost the desire if he went to bed. In the early weeks he went to bed very early!

@meandering Hahahahah... Thanks. It was mostly that, just announced it, and then I could not go back on my word, right? I never smoked in the bedroom either. But, if I woke up in the middle of the night, I had no issues with moving somewhere else for a smoke...

@maique Such a hard thing to quit—I’m so impressed. The longer you go, the less willing you are to give up the benefits. For me, the top life improvements:

  • Improved lung capacity
  • Be a good example for the young people in my life
  • No searching for a time and place to light up
  • No more cognitive dissonance from doing something I know is bad for me
  • No more worrying about the smell
  • Save money
  • No more wondering about when I will quit

@jean Thank you. If I had to pick a reason why I did this, the one you list in second place is the one that did it. Hearing tinyMovieStar speak about "your cigarettes", and wondering if I was going out to get more,.. That's what probably did it for me.

@maique that’s awesome! As a former smoker myself, I know how hard it’s been, but you made it over the hump. You’ve got this now! 💪🏻

@maique That’s pretty great, Maique! I can imagine it hasn’t been easy with the crews, but you have shown that you can do it. I’ll add one point to @jean’s list:

  • You won’t inadvertently burn your fantastic beard!

@jimmitchell Thanks. Will the will to smoke ever go away?

@maique It still comes up for me every now and then even after 30 years smoke-free. Over time it does get easier, but there will be days that are hard. What works for me is to just take it minute by minute until the urge subsides. Eventually you think about it less and when you realize it, it’s an amazing feeling. You can do this, I promise.

@jimmitchell Thank you! I expected it to be gradual, but have felt no change whatsoever since day one. I also thought I'd be going crazy on those first days, but that didn't happen also.

@maique Heh. Yeah, the first few months totally suck. Hang with it. It’ll get better. One day you’ll realize you are a former smoker and that’s a day to celebrate.
