This is so wrong — implementing AI with all its flaws and problems to make decisions about the lives of our most vulnerable. Humans aren't just nice neat packages; we're untidy bundles of complexity and nuance. Social Security (Modernisation) Amendment Bill | NZ Legislation:

The … Bill … aims to enable the administration of a more efficient, modern welfare system through the use of automated decision making (ADM).

An automated decision is a decision within an automated process where there is no substantial human involvement in making the decision.

@Miraz considering how often trained people screw up this is going to be chaos.

@Styler I’m not opposed to AI being used where it works, eg reading mammogram scans which are then double-checked by a human, but it shouldn’t be used in this way. It’s utterly unreliable for that kind of thing, and I’m concerned that it’s not a NZ-trained product that has been fed with all the cultural stuff we have here, and the data will probably be available to other countries, like the US, for heaven’s sake! It’s such an utterly wrong thing!

@Miraz That’s exactly where it went wrong with quite a few recent scandals in the Netherlands… wrong indeed🤬( https://www.amnesty.nl/wat-we-doen/tech-en-mensenrechten/algoritmes-big-data-overheid )

@ArnoldHoogerwerf Thanks for that. I ran the article through Google Translate. I hope there are NZ Organisations working to stop this legislation. In NZ the context is the Government ruthlessly trying to cut spending. If any algorithm were to be used its purpose should be to ensure everyone is getting all the help that’s available to them. Grrr

@Miraz Is the bill already approved? Otherwise object to it with all your means!

@Miraz !!! — “efficient” has become one of my least favorite words, always disguising much more than revealing
