Time to retire my first-generation Apple Watch. The battery life has dropped off suddenly and can no longer make it through the day. 3 years is good for a computer, but hoping the next watch lasts a little longer.

@manton I've been using my first-gen as a backup device while my Series 3 charges in the morning. It bothers me to see gaps in my metrics for some reason. Battery life on the first-gen was my main reason for upgrading.
@Burk Haven't thought about it too much, but probably makes sense to wait for the fall announcement if there's a new one.
@manton now that my Series 0 won’t get updated any longer, I’m looking really hard at the Charge 3 just for the sake of all week battery and under $200. I wish it worked with Apple Health, though...a whole new category to worry about silos
@staggerlee the Fitbit app doesn’t push data into Apple Health? Even the Garmin app does that.
@staggerlee Yep, health data portability will become a big issue. I'll stick to the web stuff, but hope other people are thinking about it.
@manton I'm holding out hope that there's a new watch in the Fall, and also looking forward to skipping a few generations and seeing a big jump in performance. Remember when that used to happen with Macs?
@manton yep - we soldour Series 0 Apple Watches. Still had a good enough charge. Got Series 3 with cellular. Love the snappy response 😁
@manton That said, a first-party battery replacement is $79, so you can get more life out of the Series 0 if you want to stretch its life out. I paid ~$40-50 for battery changes in “normal" nice watches that I'm sure aren't nearly the capacity of the Apple Watch.
@swh If my Series 0 could run the upcoming watchOS version, I'd definitely consider the battery upgrade. Might be a good option for next time.
@manton I had to upgrade this year as well. Wait until you see how quick the series 3 is, and how much longer the battery lasts.
@staggerlee there are apps to sync Fitbit data with Apple Health... Most of them are around $3 I think...
@manton @staggerlee there used to be a Microsoft app that would backup all of my health data to Dropbox using JSON files. That seems to be dead now... :\
@manton is it just that the battery is old? Or are you on iOS 12 beta and it's over-syncing and killing it?
@manton Regarding the beta, I think there is (was?) a battery status bug in recent betas. It told me my watch battery was at 0% about 6 hours into the day, and then the watch kept on working for the rest of the day without a problem.
@sharding (I know that's not the issue for you if you're not running the beta -- just for the benefit of others who might be reading this thread.)
@manton I’m in the same position and trying to hold out until we see what’s coming next. It’s highly annoying though!
@manton My series zero is also on its last battery legs. It’s such a nice artifact it’s a shame about its obsolescence. I knew it wouldn’t last forever, but I wish it could!
@manton I had to upgrade last fall because my 38mm Apple Watch wasn't making it through the day anymore. I really wanted it to last until this year or longer.
@manton Having previously been an owner of an Original Apple Watch I can tell you the speed on the new ones is a total game changer.
@jthingelstad @manton agreed! I found the newer models have better battery life and are much, much faster. I have a series 2 (and owned original) and my wife has a series 3.
@Vittorino yeah, 38mm. 42 is just too big to be comfortable.
@jthingelstad @manton That’s good to hear. I have my series 0 ticking away on my wrist but it really only functions for time/message notifications/step tracking. Everything else is a guess as to whether it’ll launch. I will be watching Apple announcements in a few weeks closely.
@manton Ah... I think my series 0's battery has improved with the new OS, though now I've just gotten used to charging it every night. I do not look forward to when iOS 12 will drop support for it. Might be my main reason to not update my phone!
@chet @straggerlee @vittorino FitBit chose to not support Apple Health as a business decision, hoping it would give them advantage over Apple with people already invested in FitBit silo when Apple Health came about. Basically they never will support it officially.
