The more I hear about macOS Catalina’s new security model, the more I am tempted to check out Linux as a desktop OS.

@chipotle I tried that and went back to Apple for better software. The way I see the Apple ecosystem is that I am buying into it, and it is like being a member of an exclusive club. I trade certain freedoms for the benefits of being in the club. 路
@mjdescy there are things I use a lot that would be difficult to replace, certainly at the same polish and functionality.
@chipotle Uh oh. I haven't heard about the new security changes, but now I'm curious. Would you recommend any article in particular to read, or is it clear enough that any journalist's summary will do?
@chipotle I use it every day! The only thing I every miss is nValt (but emac and deft have become my standin).
@chipotle Amusingly timed, I also found out about Darling earlier today thanks to a LWN article. Goal: Wine, but to run macOS apps on Linux.

@eli There's enough that I would miss at this point that I'd be hesitant, but I may have to look into some not-too-expensive way to explore a good modern Linux setup.
@digitalfox There's a lot of changes and different people get prickly about different aspects. My bugbear tends to be around user experience, and these tweets from Macworld's former editor in chief capture it well. twitter.com/jsnell/st...
@chipotle yeah, I converted my hackintosh over to linux about 2 years ago, and haven't looked back. If I didn't have to do some iOS stuff for work, I'd be all in, but keep my aged macbook air around for when I need a macOS pick-me-up.
@chipotle Oh. Oh my.
Yep, I can totally get how that'd be rather off-putting. Given my experience with Windows Vista (before Microsoft toned down prompts in later Windows versions), the UAC comparison felt rather on-point. It took a long time for Windows apps to properly adapt to the system, too.
@digitalfox yep. It's mildly ironic, given that one of the best "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads was the one mocking that in Vista that Jason Snell linked to.
