Going to be in NYC and surrounding areas in a couple of weeks so Beatrix can tour colleges in the area (Yikes!).

Anyone have any suggestions for things to see in our off time when we’re not seeing Broadway shows or selling kidneys?

@patrickrhone Museum of Natural History is on my list of must sees. And the Hayden Planetarium, which is attached to the museum, puts on a great show.

@patrickrhone there's so much around here... Museum mile is good and from there you can go into central park... I know you like books: the NYPL at Bryant Park with the two lions. Speaking of books, the Strand is a place to go as well. To the west, there's High Line which ends (or starts, depends where you go on) at the Whitney, another amazing place to see with plenty of coffee shops around. Right next to it, the Chelsea market with lots of different places to eat and special stores (there's a nice hot sauce store is there if you're into that). I'm guessing you're going to be around NYU, so don't' forget to check out Washington Sq park with the many people and types in it, there's alway music or a performance going on. Bleeker street is nearby and it has plenty of interested shops. Speaking of famous locations squares - Union Square is a place to go to with stores around, usually something's happening there, and it's also a central hub for transportation for the subway. Speaking of transportation - get Curb if you don't have it, that's the local Taxi app, and it's easy to get one just like Uber.

I'm probably forgetting a whole lot but this is just the top of my head. If you have any preferences let me know, I'll send them your way!

@jtr I'm actually very familiar with NYC as is my wife— yet, my question did not specify that — but I'm glad it didn't because your reply revealed things I have not been to/seen in ages or that I have but my wife has not or vice versa. Thanks for that.

@jtr Just an aside, I spent 6 years living in New Haven, CT so NYC was a regular and frequent visit for me during that time. After I moved back to Minnesota I attended every summer Macworld event in NYC for at least a decade. My wife, Beatrix, and I have visited about a dozen times since she's been born.

One of the reasons we are looking in that area college wise is her comfort and familiarity with the area. We will be staying with friends in Brooklyn while there.

@patrickrhone Ah, Understood! And sorry for sending some of the more "touristy" stuff right away.

So depending on how long you haven't been here, I'd recommend the Highline again, which is completed now (at least I think so? Last time I was there there was some construction near the water). The Whitney or Chelsea Market might be a good ending point. I enjoy the area if it isn't too hot (the last couple of days been nice around here). I'm also familiar with the Columbia area if this is one of the places you're looking into. I can send you an email with more information if you'd like.

@jtr Like I said, I'm glad you sent me the stuff you did because it's likely been a while even if I've been before.

For instance, We've been on the Highline but not for a few years (5 or so?).

Your first suggestions revealed the fact that my wife has never been to Chelsea Market and it's been forever for me so that went right on the list.

We will be touring Columbia so, yeah, an email would be welcome to patrick@patrickrhone.com

@patrickrhone it’s not peak season, but the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is still such a gem! (Conservatories are always amazing, regardless of what else is in bloom.)

Also you likely already know this but the Hungarian Pastry Shop is a really fun spot near Columbia.

@patrickrhone something I haven’t done yet, but want to, is go to the Saturday afternoon jam session at Smalls jazz club. Free with the purchase of a drink (I think), if you’re looking to sell fewer kidneys :)

@patrickrhone

Not sure when you were last here but Brooklyn Bridge Park is terrific. If you’re in the village, Goods for the Study on W 8th is worth a look. And if you’re over in Chelsea, the Jazz Record Center is a wonderful shop.

And if you’re in or around Cobble Hill, you could stop by Measure Twice!

@zbarocas It's been about 3 years. I appreciate the suggestions, all great!

FWIW, we'll be staying in the Kensington neighborhood in Brooklyn.

@patrickrhone The G train connects Kensington to Carroll Gardens / Cobble Hill. Not impossible that you would find your way to our neck of the woods!
