Unpopular opinion: Obsidian is even uglier than Emacs
@mindofaaronw Obsidian has all the right things, but I just don't like using it. It feels icky somehow.
@jasonekratz It's come a long way, for sure. And I find the minimal theme to be the one I like best. And yet, it just doesn't click for me. I am definitely in the minority!
@jasonekratz Exactly, there are 2 kinds of people, those who are using BBEdit and those who prefer VS Code. I can't work in VS Code, there are no native menus, the menu bar is not utilised (probably), no native dictionary and spell-check, it doesn't update itself the way other Mac apps do, it's not efficient with system resources and the app size is big. I can continue forever...
@jasonekratz I do use Obsidian even though I don't like it, just for functionality. I don't understand why people pay for sync if you can store the files in iCloud Driver.
@jasonekratz @yurkevich I don't have a problem using Electron or similar apps. Obsidian runs just fine for me. I /prefer/ a more native experience, but can live with a few oddities if the app does what I need. BBEdit started life 30 years ago, so it's allowed to look old 😁. To me, apps like BBEdit and Emacs look old, but Obsidian looks wrong and feels wrong. Maybe not "wrong", just off. I wish I could put my finger on why I feel that way because it's a great tool otherwise.
@jack hey let me ask you an emacs macos question.
I noticed my flyspell is showing very limited set of choices when checking for spwlli mistakes than on Linux. Do you know why? Is there a macos setting for flyspell im missing?
@jtr I'm afraid I don't know. Maybe an aspell vs ispell thing? Does M-x ispell-change-dictionary
to something else make a difference?
@yurkevich TIL, that app looks great, going to give it a try! (I‘m in the BBEdit camp and think Notational Velocity is the best software ever written)
@jasonekratz I started with a reply and ended up writing the blog post micro.cocoaswitch.com/2023/05/1...
@jasonekratz It's fine sometimes, but sometimes it tells me to go to the website and install it from scratch. This is just related to Obsidian. Visual Studio Code update mechanism seems to look better. It's not a problem at all. The point is that it behaves not like others do.
@jasonekratz iCloud sync works well for me with Obsidian and overall. But perhaps I don't use it as heavily as I could. I am aware iCloud has much room for improvement.
@jack So I finally got down to test this. I changed it to American, and it does seem to have some effect, but not exactly what I want.
It seems on the Mac I simply have way less options. On a Mac: <img src="https://taonaw.com/uploads/2023/f259593744.png" width="600" height="397" alt="" />
Meanwhile, on Linux: <img src="https://taonaw.com/uploads/2023/38324aba3f.png" width="600" height="441" alt="" />
Which one is closer to what you get?
