🔗 Zachary Kai: What Everyone Should Know About Australia

Yes, there are things with the capacity to kill you (like everywhere) and yes, we have a large selection. […] Yet you’re more likely to die from a falling coconut than a shark attack, and the people killed by spiders is infinitesimal next to the other unfortunate ways to go.

As an Aussie, I do wonder at how genuine the fear of being killed by spiders, snakes, etc. actually is. I mean, they’re real, but I’ve not personally been threatened by them. Closest are a couple of redbacks, and they’re easy to deal with.

@lmika Cars kill roughly 200 times more people in Australia each year than sharks, crocs, snakes and spiders put together. Just being inactive kills more than six times as many as that – but people seem to worry far less about these much higher risks

@writingslowly Indeed. I’m guessing these threats are not thought of so much because they’re so, for lack of a better word, “pedestrian”. Although I do find it amusing that the most likely form of casualty-by-spider is when a huntsman startles someone driving and they crash their car.

@lmika I do wonder how serious Americans, in particular, can be about being scared of Australian wildlife when they have like… endemic rabies! And even bubonic plague in the southwest. Plus bears, and scorpions, and of course they also have venomous snakes. It just seems a bit put on 😅

@lmika yeah, I remember a snake handler story about a guy who was killed trying to run over a snake with his car!

@jayeless some great ‘comedy horror’ movie ideas there though so there’s a big up-side

@jayeless Oh yeah. I feel with the natural threats Americans face, they’ve got nothing to worry about. 😀
