I am inordinately excited about the impending arrival of a new fountain pen.

@twweaver I keep reading about fountain pens and writers. It has to be some sort of sign that I should get one too? I’m not a massive fan of writing by hand, but many say it gives the brain a different perspective than typing.

@MindfulGrump It’s a multi-pronged thing for our household. For me, I like that they’re not wasteful - no chucking of disposable pens in service of my useless scribbles; and two, I just like the way they write, the way they feel.

Also, my wife has psoriatic arthritis, and has found that she can actually write by hand with them without pain since they require no pressure for ink flow.

@twweaver I was gifted one years ago when I left my first job, but it’s been lost in a myriad of house moves since. I think I’m right in saying Neil Gaiman writes his first draft by hand using a fountain pen.

@twweaver that reminds me of the Staedtler Pigment Liner which has a similar shape and profile, love that pen!

@MindfulGrump Yep. I can’t do that - I use handwriting in revisions, iterating typewritten crap into something more enjoyable by hand.

@MindfulGrump @twweaver yes he does. I believe he uses a Lamy 2000 for his novel drafts, and a Pilot Custom 823 for his book signing.

@pimoore Fair play to him, I get impatient having to write by hand at the best of times.

@twweaver I just use Ulysses really, but am interested to see whether writing with a pen would change my procrastination habits.

@MindfulGrump I don't know about the procrastination habits, but I do know it helps me think better. I was a music composition major, so I always wrote scores by hand at a piano. Working with a pen is like composing at the piano - helps me improvise and try new things.

@twweaver I’m a member of a writing group that say the same things about writing by hand. I might have to give it a go.
