Iโ€™ve been making myself a birthday playlist nearly every year since 2002. This week I posted all my birthday playlists on my website! Listen links to Spotify & Tidal. I had fun doing a little analysis too, comparing what years the songs on each playlist were published. ๐ŸŽง๐ŸŽถ

@tracydurnell love this - what a great idea. How do you pick songs each year? Is it just what you are enjoying around that time?

@humdrum yeah, a blend of what I'm enjoying at the time plus songs that "define the year" -- sometimes I'm torn between making an evergreen playlist I'll like in five years and including songs that I like at the time but suspect won't age well ๐Ÿ˜‚ I try to pay attention to the overall vibe of the playlist, so when I'm on the fence about whether to keep a song or dump it I can think of the big picture too.

@rcrackley ooh, I didn't see they had a new album out this year -- gotta check it out!

@tracydurnell You have great taste in music. (Read: similar tastes to my own) Did you do all this work manually each year?

@gregmoore haha cheers to good music! ๐Ÿป (I had fun checking out your album whale list when you shared it ๐Ÿ˜„) Yeah, I used to be really into making mix CDs and then playlists, but after college kind of ran out of people who wanted mixes made for them. Now I just make them for myself and my sister. I didn't make her one for her birthday one year and my mom told me she was so disappointed, I had to make her a belated one! ๐Ÿ˜…

@tracydurnell Thatโ€™s fun. My sister and I used to make mix CDโ€™s for each other too. We both go onto Spotify at the same time and swore weโ€™d share playlists in the same way but it never worked out the same.

@gregmoore agreed, sharing playlists on spotify just isn't the same.

My dad apparently still has a CD player in his woodworking workshop, and he told me recently he's been listening through a stack of college era mix CDs I made (for myself), and if one sucks he just throws it across the room and puts on the next one ๐Ÿ˜‚

@tracydurnell ๐Ÿ˜‚Haha, oh no! I donโ€™t think I could ever fling something my daughter made across the room. You can encourage him with what I told my parents (and myself, really): long-term studies on aging and the brain have shown that listening to unfamiliar music, even if you donโ€™t like it, improves cognitive ability. @gregmoore ๐Ÿ˜‚ love it. I'll take any evidence that supports my urge to always be trying new bands ๐Ÿค“

My brother in law runs a concert venue that puts on free shows so I think they're picking up some new stuff there.
