@robb Saying this though, the EU should be legislating against this form of malicious compliance.

@rhysmorgan I agree but I think it’s a problem of scale - they just don’t have the resources to go after every site that does an illegal cookie notice (which in my experience is most of them)

@robb Sure, but they could go after some high profile offenders, like basically every single newspaper which asks you “can we, or our 8000 partners, spy on you?”

@robb Again this? Consumers have become braindead and just accept that they have been tuned into clicking farms because the EU didn't regulate all to well.

This cookie banner nonsense should have been illegal by now. Why is there no law? Bad regulation 🤷🏽‍♂️

@rhysmorgan @robb California already has, Global Privacy Control is essentially the Do-Not-Track header with legal teeth. I hope th EU follows suit and makes it mandatory to do "Reject All" (you know, that button that should be at the top and not illegally relegated 5 levels deep) when the GPC header is sent:

@robb@social.lol Title is a bit misleading. They need consent to store a cookie not required for the bare essential site functions and cookie banners are the easiest. The title isn't technically wrong since they could get consent another way like having you reply to an email, but the law still requires them to prompt you in some way.

@latenightblog If it’s not required for site functionality they don’t need to “prompt”. They could have a link at the top of the page to opt in for people who want it. But we both know why they won’t do that.
