Helsinki area has a lot of World War I era trenches and fortifications that luckily never were needed. These are from Pitäjänmäki, near where I live

@tkoola I found "Björneborg" (I can't spell the Finnish name) quite interesting. Not WW 1 but still
@jemostrom wait, what is this? I wasn't able to recall what is in Pori/Björneborg. Never went there 😅
@jemostrom ah, yes, that is amazing. These trenches are much less impressive, mostly forgotten in parks and forests of Helsinki. There are couple of spots where they are more impressive and maintained
Funny thing is the name, Swedes call it Sveaborg and Finns Suomenlinna (roughly it would be Finland's castle)
@tkoola @jemostrom Both countries claim the borg/castle then. I’m not sure if we have any of those zigzag trenches in Norway. (But we have others, less “architectural” ones). I think most of them were built between the dissolution of the union with Sweden, and WW1.
@jemostrom @odd interestingly Russian empire did not impose its own name at any point
@jemostrom @tkoola We mustn’t forget our history, but also not forget to look forward. Seeing how much we have in common in the Nordic countries, and overlooking our differences, we can be suited to better stand together against crazy-bananas ideas and practices from elsewhere. Not that we should isolate, but cooperate, to meet the challenges together. 🕊️
