One node of resistance pushing against my keeping a Now page is the felt emphasis on immediacy. Perhaps it’s more perception than reality, but Now feels different than Recently or Lately, which trace a bit longer arc of activity. I want to meld mindfulness & deliberation.

@schuth I created mine only recently (few months), but been feeling the same about it, and even considering droping it for that reason. I'm not very much on board with "recently" or "lately", but renaming it might be a good way to go.

@schuth on the other hand - it is always ‘now’

@JohnPhilpin I definitely don’t have the capacity to update such a page in real time.

@vasta @schuth i was really into the short-lived thing when folks would include a /mentor page...this reminds me of this, a bit

@schuth I think it depends on your use; is it mostly for you or other people? Mine is mostly for other people, so 'now' becomes something other than how I experience it; people are not seeing what is happened this second, or even this day, or even this week! For that I have my actual blog posts and rather than have somebody need to read the past three weeks worth of posts (which could easily be dozens!) they can just take a look at Now to get a good idea of what's happening in my life.

@jw @vasta @schuth There's a bit of documentation along with commentary at indieweb.org/Now. Feel free to add your thoughts there for others who might be considering adding one as well.

I also like the idea of "recently" instead of now, but to some extent I also use it as a near-term/forward looking to do list of sorts the way I've been using it on my site.

@jw One of my favorites is the anti-CV, but I've yet to implement it:

@fiona unfortunately it's hard to find info about it by googling (as you might expect)! For a while a few people in mired had a page like that where you could see what kind of people they wanted to mentor and possibly get mentored by them!

@vasta Thank you; in the last few years, for reasons that don't need to be elaborated here, I've been thinking about how much claim I want the online world to have on me. Now vs. Recently is a pretty small thing, but I think the small things matter all the more these days.

@vasta If there were two things I could better cultivate in my own life, a consistent commitment to grounding practices would be near the top of the list. I admire folks who practice them, but (if I'm honest) have never gotten over the hump on concretizing them for myself.

@simonwoods In my mind, the page would be primarily for others — an offered context for what is shaping my experience & consciousness of late. I feel a tension between wanting to be open to the world & withholding the always-on access that social media has normalized.

@schuth A fascinating discussion. I always go back to Derek's orginal proposal - "a public declaration of priorities". What's my focus as of now, doesn't matter then since when I have been doing it. (I also keep a counter to communicate how many updates an item has been active in).

@schuth Agreed. How about a “Things I’m Not Doing” page. It would be a lot less fluid.

e.g. “I’m not free climbing El Cap nor planning to. (I am planning on seeing the new Alex Honnold movie, Free Solo though.)”

@schuth just noticed that my reply only had the first word ... so let’s try again ....

Exactly ... that is why no is so perfect .... now covers last year and next year if you want it to .... because now is all around us ... just depends on how you define ‘now’ ... me ... my now page is far from complete, but doesn’t need to change all the time either.

@schuth That sounds close to my own experience. As much as I can controly posts made to my blog posts, I feel a greater version of that with pages; due to their static nature it feels more like maintaining a personal project. It fits so well with how I currently think that it offers very little cost with regard to time and energy, although my initial use of it was marked by similar considerations as those you are currently posting.
