Not sure what to make of the subtitling idea, tbh. I’ve always accepted dialect/accent as a way of creating a purposeful distance between me and what I’m viewing.
@leonp That series also looks interesting! Thanks for mentioning it. As far as subtitling goes, I don't need it just for different accents but when the dialect is really unfamiliar, then it helps. I turn on (Spanish-language) subtitles when I watch anything in Spanish, too – it's just a bit of backup if I miss something they say. For hard-of-hearing people, too, I imagine it'd be a small change (surely they could put the words below the screen instead of covering parts of the frame) that'd help to make the movies more accessible.
@jayeless Yeah. Interestingly enough, my daughter (13) and her friends watch Netflix with the captions on all the time; none of them need to, they just prefer it. I wonder if that’s becoming more common?
