I think concerns about being dependent on technology are valuable, but I also note that no one is ever talking about technologies like, say, language or agriculture.

@spgreenhalgh Amongst other things, yep! We should talk more about the good things being done thanks to advances in tech.

I think many people say "technology" when what they mean is "this computer that I use mostly for myself in the context of a capitalistic-driven consumable good". But, you know, that's complicated.

@simonwoods To be honest, I don't think language and agriculture are without their downsides. I just get annoyed when, like you say, we only understand technology and its effects in terms of "things with chips."

@spgreenhalgh Agreed. Another example: one of my regular jobs is to make a hot-water-bottle for my wife, since it helps her to cope with pain. These things haven't changed for at least decades (maybe more) and they do an amazing job. But you're unlikely to see people talk about the technology at work there.
