@nitinkhanna i got intrigued by the “with” in the title, not the usual “without.” It is a shame that Facebook seems to be doing everything wrong, I really liked your experiment - while reading I was considering following it.

I specially liked the paragraph about Facebook filling the void with more stuff and people not realizing something is missing.

@fcy thank you! Yes, it's certainly tempting to try to personalize Facebook.

It was a little heartbreaking, though, when I realized that no one on there is missing my content. But some quiet contemplation made me realize the problem with their algorithm.

@nitinkhanna not sure what's going on but I get a "You have entered an incorrect reCAPTCHA value." warning whenever I try to leave a comment to this post. No reCAPTCHA is actually visible.

@nitinkhanna I once had a friend who pulled in all his Twitter posts/responses to his Facebook. I said "once had" because I unfriend him to get rid of the noise.

@khurtwilliams I very much understood that it would be noisy, but if anyone wanted, they could talk to me. And they were all text posts, not links. So they were actually thoughts. Was your friend posting links or thoughts?

@khurtwilliams I’ll check what’s wrong with it. I think a badly configured recaptcha is most irritating and now I’m guilty of it?! Shame!

@nitinkhanna he was importing his live twitter timeline. When he responded to tweets we only got to the his side of the response. Quite annoying.

@nitinkhanna are you on WordPress? Akismet not working? I get comment spam but Akismet always catches it.

@khurtwilliams it’s WP, it’s Akismet, but the captcha is coming from some other plugin, which I installed because I was under attach for a while. I have now installed a better fail2ban filter, so I think I can remove that captcha plugin...

@khurtwilliams ugh. That’s silly. I used twitter’s official settings. That ensures only full tweets (and for some stupid reason, quote tweets) got sent. Their settings page was broken, so I couldn’t turn off quote tweets. But replies never went to Facebook. That would be silly!!

@nitinkhanna ah got it! I forgot how much value I get from Digital Ocean droplets. The one-click deployment includes fail2ban on the Linux server and WP Fail2ban WordPress plugin.

@nitinkhanna It also felt weird to see tweets in facebook. This was several years ago. It’s alll moot now. Facebook deprecated that API.

@nitinkhanna Knock on wood, after going back onto Facebook this summer, the algorithm has been pretty good to me. Don’t know if it’s my friends, my rejection of all ads, or Friendly (it turns the mobile site into an app). I’ve also found the joy of discovering plenty of cool events through friends marking interest.

@khurtwilliams you know, I hadn't ever understood how the WP fail2ban plugin is supposed to work. But now that I've played with the jails a little more, and created my own filters, I see how it can help. I'll start using it and dump the overdone captcha...

@Bruce must be due to Friendly. Maybe I should use it too? I do use Instagram++ on iOS to get rid of the ads...

@nitinkhanna Friendly is pretty great. It also builds in similar app wrapping of Messenger, Twitter, Instgram, Reddit, and YouTube. I highly recommend it.

@Bruce doesn't it have ads of it's own? Did you pay something to get rid of those? I use third party apps for twitter on iOS but something like that would be nice on Android! I'll try out friendly 😊

@Bruce @nitinkhanna Interesting! Should give friendly a shot.. I just installed pi-hole to block ads across my home network and ublock to cover up the gaps that pi-hole had. Works pretty good so far! Was looking at ways to clean out the in-app ads.
