Want to connect an old digital video camera—like the Sony DCR-PC5E—to a modern Mac? You’ll need: a 4-pin to 9-pin FireWire (i.LINK) cable, a FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter, and a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter. I call it the MiniDV camcorder cable cascade. 😅 It’s not pretty, but it works!

@sod The adapter chain is a bit ridiculous, but I am very glad that these can still be used with modern computers. It’s always sad when hardware is obsoleted and there is no way to make use of it anymore. I’m always amazed when iPods still sync with modern macOS, for instance.

@sod Love that it still works! I have a bunch of old MiniDV tapes that one day I really want to convert.

@sod Dalhstrand’s Law: the observation that the number of adapters in a DV-cam to computer setup doubles about every 10 years.

I was beginning to lose all faith in finding a solution for this without investing a lot of money. Glad to see it’s still possible!
