I agree with what Dan Moren has to say about autocorrect on sixcolors.com; I’d love to be able to add words to the iOS dictionary and remove unwanted ones. ‘Don’t’ often becomes ‘Donny’ for me and I don’t know anyone called Donny.

Wish List: Edit iOS’s autocorrect dictionary

@martinfeld It can learn “Microblogvember” for me, but yet not “Manton” (or “Micro.blog”) :-P

@smokey That’s so weird... any others?

@martinfeld I know there are others, but I haven’t run across them recently enough to remember.

@smokey Quite often, @NTKF and I will write ‘okeh’ rather than ‘OK’ and my Mac sometimes liked to change it to ‘oaken’. It always gives away which device I’m using.

@martinfeld Ha! In our family, that’s “okle” (short for “okle-dokle”, another slang for OK); I forget offhand what things iOS autocorrects it to, but it sure doesn’t stay “okle” ;-)

@smokey Haha so kind of like 'okey-dokey'?

@martinfeld Yep, another variant of that exactly!

@smokey We may have to use your version at home too. Thanks! Ha

@martinfeld You’re welcome! :-)

Another thing I’ve noticed on occasion—I just saw and fixed it again in yesterday’s post—is that it autocorrects the curly quotes in the wrong direction, grandmothers instead of grandmothers

@smokey Did it do it to your post just then? Both look like they have the same punctuation.

@martinfeld Micro.blog’s default font makes it nigh-impossible to notice the difference (even bolded)—which is why it slips by me so often, until I see it on my blog—so it’s easier to notice in a serif or monospace font (or a sans-serif with more distinct forms—even Helvetica makes them more distinct than the M.b font!) ;-)

@smokey OK thank you for explaining that! I understood the difference between the punctuation marks to which you referred but yes, just couldn’t see it.

@martinfeld I add text replacement shortcuts for the words I want corrected in the iOS dictionary. General > Keyboard > Text Replacement - which overrides the autocorrect dictionary. I dislike autocorrect intensely, so have it off most places.

@kitt Yes I’ve done that too although not for things that displease me—good idea! I’ve generally done it for long emoji or stuff like ‘alogo’ to insert a black Apple logo.

@martinfeld my list is a few hundred items long. I worry about moving them all to a new phone. ᕕ( ᐛ)ᕗ

@martinfeld all the contractions, tbh (ive to I've or havent to haven't or im to I'm) and n for space (incan for 'I can' or hownto for 'how to'). I recognize I'm an edge case. :)

@smokey For me it’s a lot of what you’ve already mentioned, and mixing “ and » 🙄

@kitt Does that mean when you are writing about Incan civilization, it changes that to I can civilization? Or are the replacements case-sensitive?

@smokey it would change, yes, were I writing about Incans. Some of the replacements bite me, like "tour" I have correct to "your" but since I write your incorrectly as tour more than I write tour on purpose, I'm good with it. YMWV :)
