As an experiment, I thought, let’s try following all the people I follow on Micro.blog on Mastodon. Micro.blog lets you export your “following” list, and Mastodon lets you import that list. Only 25 of the ~300 people show up on Mastodon. Guess the rest haven’t opted into the fediverse sharing?

@pratik I'm off and on with the fediverse thing with Micro.blog. Most of the time, I'm the only one following. The most I've had is four followers there. I figure folks are following me on Mastodon proper instead.

@skoobz Since I can't use the Mastodon apps (understandably) with my fediverse-powered Micro.blog account, I auto-cross-post everything to another Mastodon account. I have had that account for just over a year. But non-Micro.blog people also follow me there, so it's not an accurate comparison. Anyways, even for me, who is slightly more tech-aware than the average Joe, it's mystifying.

@pratik I think a lot of (especially older posters here) crosspost instead of federate. I do both and continue to think that it’s silly to think of them as either/or and not yes/and.

@jsonbecker And that's fine coz I do that too. But what's the best way to know which account to follow? Apart from manually checking everyone's profile. I just want to follow their Micro.blog posts on Mastodon. Whether they will see my replies to those Mastodon posts (on Micro.blog) is next to figure out.

I follow your Mastodon-specific one there coz I know you cross-post.

@pratik if you follow json@json.blog, I won’t see likes or reposts but I do see replies in Micro.blog the app.

I don’t think there’s any auto discovery of cross post accounts.

@jsonbecker Can't find json@json.blog via either Ivory or Mona. Not wanting to see likes or boosts is one reason that keeps me on the Micro.blog timeline. But I can look past that as long as Micro.blog people see my replies made via Mastodon in the Micro.blog app. I asked one user who has a @handle@micro.blog profile on Mastodon but haven't heard back yet.

@pratik oh I lied, it’s jsonbecker@json.blog — but yes, I am 100% confident if you reply to @jsonbecker from a Mastodon account I see it natively within Micro.blog.

@jsonbecker The posts on this address and the indieweb one are the same, right? I’m mostly interested in seeing if replies to @handle@micro.blog work

@pratik they’re 99% the same. Very rarely I post something only to the mastodon account. Mostly saying which it is so you could test with me if you want— but I do have some followers who reply from there so I know it works.

@jsonbecker Thanks. Will do. BTW we wouldn’t know if a Micro.blog user has not activated Fediverse sharing, right? I wouldn’t want to reply into a void.

@pratik @jsonbecker I assume anybody who doesn't have the "Fediverse" section of a profile doesn't have the "ActivityPub" — Manton is killing me by using two different technical terms for the same feature — feature enabled. For example: Pete.

@pratik if you can see the post from within Mastodon, you can reply to it from there and it’ll go through. Seeing it and it being repliable are the same thing.

@SimonWoods Ah! I now see the /Fediverse indication on the user's profile on the web. I still wish there was some visual indicator in the 'Following' list.
