For 20 years it seemed 1Password knew exactly what customers wanted, how they used their software, and how it could be improved. They’ve been taking a PR beating the last couple years, at least in my circles. They used to the obvious choice, and now most people I know are looking for other options (or olde... danielpunkass.micro.blog

@danielpunkass I'm still stuck on the older version (pre subscription), I don't want to switch but at some point I will need too :-(

@danielpunkass Yeah. I'm still hanging on to 1Password 7 with iCloud sync. If they take that away from me, I don't know where to go but Apple's system.

@sherif @V_ @danielpunkass I am really happy with 1PW. Everything works always flawlessly. I am happy to pay the (very small) fee for what I am getting. It makes my life easier and more secure.

@holgerfrohloff My concern is not the subscription model. I do value the reliability of the core functionality of the product, hence feeling attached to it, and I don't mind the part about paying again :)

I'm bothered by two things. First, I don't like that I lose iCloud sync. I understand there might be practical, software development-based, non-malicious reasons why they couldn't let me keep that, but I am also allowed to have my reasons for wanting what I want, especially when it comes to trusting a company's servers and sync with protecting the most valuable bits of my entire life. Second, like @danielpunkass said, there's just been a series of "we're doing things for other people who are increasingly not you or like you" that gives me pause. I think I have one kind of relationship with a product, and then they go and raise a round of $620 million in funding, and I wonder about that relationship.

@sherif thank you for putting it that way. Now I understand better what you mean. I might disagree, but I understand you; 👍

@holgerfrohloff I'm happy with it as well. I'm just not happy how the app is developing. My biggest contention point at the moment is that I can't have local vaults anymore. I've come to the point that I will need to pay subscriptions for some important applications at some point. And 1PW is such an app.

And when I'm thinking about it right now I can't quite point out why I have an issue with the cloud storage by them. I'm not fundamentally opposed against cloud storage (I have the local vaults in Dropbox). The best I can come up is that with the vault in my file system I have more control. But that also does not sound 100% right.

Looks like I need to do some thinking here :-)
