If I were in the need of saving links/read-later type of thing. What’s the best way nowadays? I was pretty much thinking either Instapaper or even Pinboard.

@bix I learned a while ago that if I put something in a reading list I never look at it again. 😒 These days I open a browser tab, make an email or RSS item Unread. Those things work for me.
@Gabz I’m using Instapaper, it is the thing that works the best for me. I have never liked pocket either
@Gabz Don’t forget about IndiePaper. It makes a JSON feed which you can import into your RSS reader. Reading List is also a sound option within the Apple ecosystem.
@jack If I wanted to play with Wallabag and other self-hosted solutions, would I go with something like Linode? Or is there a cheaper/simpler option for a novice?
@canion There's a hosted option at www.wallabag.it with a free trial and cheap subscription. Otherwise, you might look at younohost or Cloudron. Both, once installed, let you easily install/manage dozens of self-hosted apps via a web control panel. I'm using Cloudron, but you can only install 2 apps with the free version. They're working on better pricing for "personal" use. There's a pre-configured DigitalOcean droplet for Cloudron. Not sure about Yunohost.
@Gabz On a similar search currently. I was all in on Pinboard, but iOS clients for it all seem to be dead. And Maciej is more interested in politics right now to spend a lot of time on the service.
@Gabz Cal me weird, but I send them to my to-do manager in a “read later” list. In my case Things3.
@hjertnes Yeah, Instataper probably makes more sense, also I can sync Instapaper with Reeder if I needed and have everything in one place kinda thing
@mcg I had a Pinboard membership before and it used to work pretty well. But yeah if the ios apps seem to be abandoned then that'll be a concern.
@JMaxB Right! probably the reason (among others) that Pocket isn't really a service I want to use.
@ronguest Actually, I have heard of this before and I have also done it in the past but with Omnifocus
@thatguygriff I should probably try this and get back into feedbin, it's an all around great service to have. I'll probably sacrifice Fantastical's sub for Feedbin's, I get more benefits from the later than the former. 😁😁😅
@Gabz That's what I do, but I've found that I rarely read later no matter how I store them. Better to just read them now. 😎
@Miraz @bix @Gabz After reading this conversation I deleted Pocket and Instapaper of my computer and phone. I didn't even go in and check what was there, I just deleted the apps. I so very rarely read anything that I keep - though I guess that I could log into the accounts in the future if curiosity got the better of me?
@Gabz Instapaper. Hands down.
If you’re iOS only, which I wouldn’t recommend you be, I would say Fiery Feeds has an iCloud synced RSS and Read Later solution in addition to supporting Fever, Feedly, and others; and it’s a pretty great app!
@Gabz I’ve come back to Instapaper. It just works. And I have a shortcut to randomly open an item so when I have a few minutes to spare I can just pop open an article.
@seishonagon I think I’m gonna try Instapaper again. A lot of people have actually recommended it. I have used it in the past but I don’t remember why I stopped. 🤔
@Gabz @seishonagon @nitinkhanna I use Instapaper too, but I feel like pagination on iPads has been broken forever and they seem uninterested in fixing it.
@gabz about your original question, do you just want read later or you want notes too? I picked Instapaper because of notes and highlights. (I have an IFTTT recipe that takes my notes and highlights in real time and posts them to my WordPress blog for preservation and blogposts)
Also, mobile only or desktop too? for Mobile only, with no notes, you can pick Fiery Feeds or Reeder.
For desktop/web experience, you have a few options - wallabag, Unmark (@cdevroe), Polar (for PDF support).
If you're brave, you could try send-to-Kindle for all of the above. I'm not!
@Miraz A bit extreme maybe, but reading the conversation made me face the facts of how much I don't read of what what I do save. So "why," I asked myself, "do you keep it?" The ace came put and they were gone. I think that I feel lighter as a result.
@crossingthethreshold I'm getting better, slowly, at facing the facts of what I do and will do, rtaher than what I imagine I might do. For me it's an ongoing process of refining what I really am interested in.
