As I’m trying to use most websites less often (they are generally terrible, in every way), I’m finding it difficult to work out where to go for answers to certain questions.

For example: can iCloud preserve full-res photos?

This is why Twitter continues to be useful.

For those who want to answer my example, don't worry about it. I'm just going to test to find out. Which is probably what I should have decided from the start before, you know, attempting to use the internet as a resource for knowledge... A STRANGE IDEA, HUH.

@simonwoods I've always assumed iCloud does preserve full resolution photos, both JPG and RAW. I always find Reddit useful for searching out those kind of answers and for reviews.

@scientifics It does... sort of. From what I've seen, there's a lot of doubt about the quality at different points of access (app vs web vs files, etc) and sharing is, uh, complex at best.

There's a chance I'll find something in Apple's documentation or third-party literature, both of which are preferable to any of the aforementioned websites. However, from what I've seen of Apple's documentation it is not neccesarily as thorough or flexible as it needs to be to answer quick questions; I'm guessing that is why they made the official support account on Twitter.

@simonwoods I do agree that shared albums aren't full quality.

@scientifics Yeah, I hoped that wouldn't be true. Also, I tried to share a single file from my Windows machine to my wife and when it was done it just said "Shared!" or something vague like that.... that was it, no other information, no way of knowing exactly what happened. And she didn't receive it, at least that we could tell, so I just shared via Messenger.

I know that none of these big monopolies of tech want to make it easy for people outsider of their own silos but in that instance they should make sharing in general as easy as possible. Instead, all of these issues just make me want to set up Dropbox and be done with it.
