@rosemaryorchard @smokey Fascinating. I grew up on the Upper Mississippi; practically all the civil engineering efforts (built 1930s–1960s) are about containment, rather than diversion. Die Neue Donau looks quite pleasant.
@schuth It is! The island they created is very nice - I enjoyed a great barbecue there last year.
@schuth @rosemaryorchard And still every couple of years, we get stories on the news about the Mississippi breaking levees and flooding large swaths of land and sometimes cities/towns. Those Germans (or Austrians, in this case) seem to have the right idea :-)
Still a bit surprised that I never managed to learn about something that extensive, that had been under construction for so long, in an European capital along a major European river, though!
