Just to get a different perspective on another network then Twitter: What would be your definition of a blog? What elements would that definition hold? Is a blog pure txt/img? Is Instagram a blog? Snapchat? When does a blog become an online magazine?

@frank I always refer back to this piece from Dave Winer from 2003.

@colinwalker Ah yes...I know that one. Would be great if The Dave would let his light shine on that one given the changes in the online world the last 15 years... Would a Facebook feed count as "The unedited voice of a person"?

@frank Technically, as long as it was displayed as such without any algorithmic interference. But there are also the more technical considerations to take in to account and a social feed is too limited to be a true blog.

@frank That's why micro.blog is different because it is a social layer existing on top of actual (micro)blogs rather than a feed emulating such purpose.

@frank Facebook would not qualify. It's edited in that it may or may not show up in a given follower's timeline. Also, it can be censored, which I'd say immediately disqualifies it.

@colinwalker As I read that I wanted to challenge the “unedited” part of his definition. Then I realised he was saying that there was no other person editing.

I assume he doesn't think that the blogger should always leave their posts in raw first-draft form. That would be daft.

I don't even post comments without an editing pass, usually.

@colinwalker Yeah, if a person’s Facebook page (what used to be called their “wall”) was just a reverse-chronological feed of their posts, then it would be a blog.

But what would the main page we visit be? If it was a reverse-chronological feed of my friends' posts (as I want), it would be like an aggregator of sorts.

But as it is now, it's not a blog.

@devilgate I have often taken “unedited” to mean “not self-censoring” but Dave said that’s also not how he envisaged it.

@devilgate Exactly. The control exercised over the content there is ridiculous.

@frank Interesting question. While I think microblogs could exclusively feature photos, I don’t describe Instagram as a blog. It doesn’t strike me as a blog any more than a photo sharing community like Flickr did a decade ago. The algorithm has something to do with that, too.

@frank I still think RSS (or ATOM? Or JSONFeed? Are those still things?) is a requirement for a blog.

@sirshannon Well...there are the technical requirements for a blog but would that mean every site with a feed is a blog? I think not. It still needs a dash of personality to be a blog. In my book.

@frank Saying a blog requires a feed is not in any way saying that every site with a feed is a blog.
